Welcome to the SouthCoast Mesh project! We're building a decentralized, community-driven wireless network across the SouthCoast region of Massachusetts.
Our network creates resilient local connectivity and strengthens community bonds through shared technology infrastructure.
What is it?
The SouthCoast Mesh is a wireless network anyone can join, for free.
Inexpensive handheld or countertop devices can be used to send and receive messages and data.
Anyone can join the network and have public or private text communication.
It can also be used to transmit small amounts of data, like weather data. Farms across the US have used similar technology to monitor their crops.
The network is powered by nodes that broadcast and receive data and pass it around, like a relay.
For every node that joins the network, the area we covers gets larger and larger.

How It Works & How to Join
Our mesh network uses wireless equipment to create a decentralized network where each node connects to multiple others, creating a resilient local communication system. It works independently of the Internet and phone networks. It's truly off-grid!
How it works
We use an open source protocol called Meshtastic. It can run on inexpensive counter-top or handheld devices, and is free to use and access. When someone sets up a new node, automatically it connects to the nearest node, and then to the next nearest node, and so on.
Get involved
If you're interested in joining, all you need to do is acquire a node and set it up.
