Getting started

Step one: you need a node!

If you are handy, you can build one yourself, but don't worry, you can buy pre-built nodes and they won't break the bank! There are options for many different skill levels. You can buy something ready to go or you can do some basic assembly and electronics. It's up to you!

Pre-assembled nodes, ready to go

If you don't want to build your own node, you can buy one of the following pre-assembled nodes. They are ready to go out of the box and will work with the Meshtastic firmware.

DIY nodes

If you are handy, you can build your own node. You will need a LoRa radio module and a microcontroller. The following are some of the most popular options:

LILYGO T-Echo

Popular development board with built-in LoRa and NRF52840

Outdoor and Solar Nodes

For extending the network outdoors, solar-powered nodes are an excellent option. They can be placed in strategic locations to expand coverage without needing a power outlet.

Benefits of outdoor nodes: They significantly extend the network range and can operate 24/7 without requiring power from your home's electrical system.

Step Two: Join the Network

After you build and/or power on your Meshtastic device, it will start automatically seeking nearby nodes and begin passing data. You can say hello to your new friends, or you can create a private channel to keep your messages private.

Getting connected:
  1. Power on your Meshtastic device
  2. Download the Meshtastic app for your device (or if it's a standalone device, you are good to go!)
  3. Connect to your node via Bluetooth
  4. Set your username and configure your preferences
  5. Start exchanging messages with nearby nodes!
